In a historic milestone for India’s legal and judicial framework, Justice Prathiba M. Singh of the Delhi High Court has been officially inducted into the prestigious International Intellectual Property (IP) Hall of Fame. With this distinction, she becomes the very first Indian judge to receive this international honor, solidifying India’s growing prominence and leadership in global intellectual property jurisprudence.
The recognition was formally conferred upon Justice Singh at the IPBC Global event held in San Diego, California. Organized by Intellectual Asset Management (IAM), a leading international publication dedicated to global IP policy and law, the Hall of Fame honors individuals who have made exceptional, world-class contributions to the creation, management, and enforcement of intellectual property rights, as well as the evolution of IP law and policy.
Justice Singh’s induction celebrates her remarkable journey and profound impact on intellectual property law, spanning both her distinguished career as a pioneering litigator and her stellar tenure on the bench. Before being elevated as a Permanent Judge of the Delhi High Court in May 2017, she was widely recognized as one of India’s foremost IP lawyers, handling landmark and complex litigation across patents, trademarks, copyrights, designs, and plant varieties. Her expertise extended to policy advisory roles where she actively shaped the nation’s legislative framework, including serving as a member of the elite IPR Think Tank that drafted India’s pioneering National IPR Policy in 2015.
Since ascending to the bench, Justice Singh has played a monumental role in modernizing India’s judicial approach to intellectual property disputes. She served as the chairperson of the high-powered committee that recommended and oversaw the establishment of the dedicated Intellectual Property Division (IPD) within the Delhi High Court following the abolition of the Intellectual Property Appellate Board (IPAB). Under her guidance, the court formulated specialized norms including the Delhi High Court Intellectual Property Rights Division Rules, 2022, and the Rules Governing Patent Suits, 2022, which have drastically streamlined IP litigation, minimized procedural delays, and provided predictable timelines for complex technology and commercial trials.
Beyond her domestic achievements, Justice Singh’s influence has resonated profoundly across international legal forums. Her global standing is further highlighted by her role as the Chairperson of the Advisory Board of Judges at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), alongside prior global accolades such as being rated among the “50 Most Influential People in IP” by Managing IP for consecutive years.
Legal scholars, practitioners, and international peers have lauded the induction as a defining moment for India’s judiciary. By bridging practical industry realities with robust judicial oversight, Justice Singh has not only elevated the standards of Indian IP adjudication but has also set an inspiring precedent for jurists worldwide. Her recognition in the Global IP Hall of Fame highlights how specialized, visionary judicial leadership can drive national innovation, strengthen enforcement mechanisms, and bolster confidence among international investors and creators operating within the Indian market.
