Pune: A serious concern regarding security and privacy has emerged at the Shivajinagar District and Sessions Court, where litigants, their relatives, and even some lawyers are recording mobile videos and creating “reels” to viralize on social media platforms. This alarming trend inside a highly sensitive and disciplined judicial environment has raised major questions regarding court security and discipline.
Reels with Accused and Indirect Glorification of Crime
Several videos are currently viral on social media showing lawyers discussing cases with accused individuals in serious crimes, entering the court premises alongside them, or walking together outside. In some videos, accused persons are seen sitting casually outside courtroom chambers or interacting with supporters upon leaving the court. Legal experts have expressed deep concern that such reels indirectly glorify crime.
“The court is an extremely sensitive place, and maintaining its reputation, security, and discipline is the collective responsibility of everyone. Strict adherence to rules is essential.” — Adv. Prataprao More, Vice President, Pune Bar Association
Perhaps the most alarming aspect of this issue is that in highly sensitive matters—such as marital disputes, divorce cases, and child custody hearings within the Family Court—certain litigants are recording mobile videos of each other within the court premises to make reels. This directly breaches the privacy rights of the concerned parties. Senior legal professionals have lamented that in the pursuit of social media fame, some young lawyers and litigants are disregarding court decorum and boundaries.
Bombay High Court’s Explicit 1997 Circular
Crucially, according to a clear circular issued by the Bombay High Court in December 1997, photography and video recording are strictly prohibited within court premises. No one is permitted to record videos inside the court area without prior permission from the Principal District Judge. Despite these regulations, current observations show that these rules are being blatantly ignored.
There is now an urgent need to implement strict measures to preserve the security of the judicial system and crack down on those chasing cyber publicity. Citizens are closely watching what legal actions the administration will take against this practice.
