88 Days Behind Bars for Wrongful Arrest By Lonavala Police
In a shocking display of administrative apathy and investigative negligence, a 66-year-old senior citizen was forced to spend 88 days behind bars after local law enforcement arrested him instead of the actual accused due to a severe identity mix-up. The gross miscarriage of justice came to light during a high-profile press conference held on Monday (July 27), where Nationalist Congress Party (NCP – Sharad Pawar faction) spokesperson Vikas Lavande fiercely condemned the Lonavala City Police and demanded strict institutional accountability.
According to details shared during the briefing, the Lonavala City Police Station had registered a criminal case where the designated suspect was a man named Shekhar Patel. While police procedures mandated the apprehension of Patel, officers mistakenly targeted and arrested 66-year-old Mumtaz Ali Jaffari in a stark failure of background verification and identity cross-checking.
Key Lapses in the arrest case:
- Severe Identity Mismatch: The name, age, and official documents of Mumtaz Ali Jaffari had no correlation with the details listed for the actual accused, Shekhar Patel.
- Ignored Pleas: Despite Jaffari repeatedly protesting his innocence and stating that he was not Shekhar Patel, his pleas were completely disregarded by authorities.
- Prolonged Imprisonment: Jaffari was subjected to prolonged police and judicial custody before finally securing bail from the court last month.
Vikas Lavande pointed out that despite repeated assertions from the senior citizen regarding his true identity, officials proceeded with custody. “Because of sheer irresponsibility and blatant negligence by the investigating officers, an innocent senior citizen was subjected to unmerited trauma and harassment,” Lavande stated. He has formally demanded a thorough inquiry into the conduct of the investigating officers, calling for criminal proceedings against those responsible and adequate financial compensation for the victim.
In response to the mounting public pressure, Police Inspector Sachin Patil of Lonavala City Police Station addressed the media to clarify the department’s position. He acknowledged that primary investigations indicate Shekhar Patel was indeed the intended perpetrator, adding that internal procedural reviews are underway to examine how the discrepancy occurred during identification and custody.
Legal experts and civil rights activists in Pune have echoed Lavande’s sentiments, emphasizing that mandatory identity verification protocols must be strictly enforced to prevent such devastating administrative errors. As the inquiry progresses, the case serves as a grim reminder of the human cost of institutional oversight.
The press conference concluded with prominent legal advocates, including Adv. Milind Pawar, Adv. Aniket Jambhulkar, and members of the Jaffari family, reiterating their commitment to seeking complete justice and restitution for the victim.
